{August 29, 2012}   Returning To School As A Older College Student

In My Own Words, Each of us has an objective in life, a goal to reach, and that person will always look to make that dream possible. Each person will choose his own path for happiness and self satisfaction; thus choices are to be made in life and it doesn’t always go the way you’ve planned it. However, perseverance and strong will could be the key to go further and reach your goals throughout life. Everybody wants to accomplish something special in their existence, but we have to be patient and manage these dreams wisely in order to succeed with honor.
For me, Coming to college as an adult, we have many expectations and preconceptions of what college will or will not be. I am returning to school is because of the ever growing workforce today. I feel as though the world is moving forward so rapidly that at times it is difficult to keep up. There are always a large number of people out there that are smarter than you with slightly more drive. Therefore, we must fight for our future, to ensure that a financially stable future is available when we get older. This is a very strong reason but I have a stronger reason than this. I want my degree to not only gain more knowledge and experience; but for my family as well. I believe that “knowledge is power”, and with knowledge you can accomplish greater things but The reason I am returning to school as an adult is be my first-time entering college at Touro College and I am in my 20s but I want to do something with my life to get an college education.

When I was a child, my mother went back to school but she went to Touro College, an private college to get her bachelor degree in human services because my mother wants to work in the human services industry to help people with serious learning disorders like down’s syndrome and autism. When my mother was in college, my grandmother helped me out with my homework, sometimes in her own time. In my pre-teen years, my mother gradates from college with her bachelor degree in human services and now she works as a coordinator at her mental health center for people who have learning disorders in Queen, New York. In my teen years, I enter high school in East Harlem. I did very well in high school, my favorite subjects in high school are visual arts and history but visual arts is one of my favorite because I been doing visual arts since I was about 8 years old. I want to go to college after I finishing high school but unfortunately I cannot go because my school did not telling me enough information about college and financial aid for college and also, I did not saving enough money for school. In 2006, I enrolled in art school but it is a home-studying course I did for two and an half years. I give a lot of contribution of studying difference types of art and practice to become an better artist. In septemeber of 2009, I graduate from art school and after finishing art school, I continue doing artwork on my own time when I am in school and work. My next goal is going back to school but I want to college.

I believe motivates my learning is personal and why it is motivates me because my mother wanted me get a simple education like college and job training but I am doing both in the same time. My goals are going to college to get a degree, doing job training in tech industry and continue doing visual arts as a talent. After I graduate from art school, my next plan is going back to school but my grandmother was very sick but she was ok and also, she had cancer that time and I have to take care my grandmother while my mother is working in Queen, New York. A few months later in 2011 of september, My grandmother has passed away for Cancer, she was 71 years old. I was not very happy about my mother’s death but I kept my hopes went up. In April of 2012, I apply for college-I went to Touro College, The same college when my mother went for her degree in human services. I am going to Touro College for My degree in Liberal Arts, first and after that I might study for either English or History (AKA Social Studies) as my second degree and other goals are getting a Job during college and conutining doing visual arts (painting).

I Think many careers currently require that an applicant have some type of higher education in order to have a chance at competing for a job in today’s market. Therefore, returning back to school to complete my degree was a very rational decision for me to make. We are sometimes told that experience is the key to getting the perfect job, but in my years in the workforce I have learned that is not always the case. Employers will sometimes use the fact that you don’t have a degree against you and I refuse to let that happen to me. I want to make sure that I am armed with everything that will allow me to compete with the other candidates. Today’s workforce is forever growing and in order to be able to compete with others that are out there, you must have something extra special that makes you stand out. Experience is very important almost key in some cases, but in my opinion having a college degree will help you become a more marketable applicant. A degree will set you apart from other candidates that only have work experience as their best asset. Returning back to school to obtain my degree will also be pertinent to my future and the future of my children. It will also provide stability so that I can continue to take care of them and be able to contribute more to my household. Also I would like for my children to have a positive role model and let them know that it is very important to receive a college education. I would also like them to see that school does not have an age limit. There were many reasons I decided to return back to school. One main reason is the fact that obtaining a degree is one of the major personal goals I set for myself and not completing that goal would be unacceptable.
